VfL Bochum 1848 looks back on more than 150 years of sports tradition: The planning of the formation of a gymnastic club started already in July 1848. The club formation took place on the 18th of February 1849. In its contemporary form, VfL Bochum has been existing since the 15th of April 1938: By that time, Germania, TuS and the gymnastic club joined together to form VfL Bochum 1848. In July 1949, the football section became a self-dependent part within the association.
Today the VfL’s football section has 3,400 members. VfL Bochum as a whole counts about 6,000 members who go in for activities such as  badminton, basketball, fencing, football, hockey, athletics, handball, swimming, dancing, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics and volleyball.
