VfL Bochum 1848 have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Nikoloz Gelashvili. The 26-year-old striker joins the Ruhr valley outfit from the current Georgian champions and league leaders FC Zestafoni. Gelashvili has penned a three-and-a-half-year contract until 30 June 2015.
The Georgia international (9 caps) has scored seven goals in eleven games for FC Zestafoni so far this season, providing two assists. FC Zestafoni crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round against Sturm Graz. Unfortunately, two goals from Gelashvili proved not enough to keep FC Zestafoni in the competition. Gelashvili also hit the target twice in the Europa League play-off match against FC Bruges.
“We have been monitoring the striker for several months. He has a fine nose for goal and we are very happy that the transfer has worked out,” sporting director Jens Todt said. “He is a very agile, two-footed striker. Gelashivili is really potent in front of goal as he is also very strong in the air. He will add quality to the team,” head coach Andreas Bergmann commented on the deal.
Nikoloz Gelashvili has scored a total of 64 goals in 108 matches. He has become the top scorer in 2009 and 2011. “I’m very happy to be here and play for a club like Bochum. I want to improve my game and develop my skills. Bochum is the right club for me,” Nikoloz Gelashvili said.
